Do you know that 50% of donated organs do not get used? That goes up to 80% of donated lungs! And yet we have a long waiting list for most organs. That is both unconscionable and unnecessary.

In 2013 I thought to myself, what can we do? The answer: organ vitrification (“freezing”). This would bring down the enormous cost of organ transplants, it would allow more time so that we could have safer procedures and, most importantly, it would allow us to use more of the organs which have been donated.

We have been freezing sperm, eggs and embryos successfully for many many years. Freezing organs is simply a matter of scale. That does not mean that it is easy. Merely that it is doable. If we have the will and make it a priority.
